Aadhaar PAN Linking -Penalty & How to avoid?

Aadhaar - PAN Linking

After March 31, 2022 (i.e., on April 1, 2022), linking PAN Aadhaar will cost you money. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) announced this in a notification dated March 29, 2022.

According to the CBDT, if you link your PAN to your Aadhaar on or before June 30, 2022, you will be charged Rs 500. If the PAN-Aadhaar linking is completed on or after July 1, 2022, a Rs 1,000 penalty will be levied.

How to Check if your PAN and Aadhaar Card are Linked?


i) Go to the official site of the income tax department — www.incometax.gov.in

ii) Click on the Quick Links option. There, you will find an option to check ‘Link Aadhaar Status’. You need to click on that.

iii) After this, you will see a new screen on your computer or mobile. Here, you have to enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers.

iv) Once you fill in the details, click on ‘View Link Aadhaar Status’.

v) The status of your Aadhaar-PAN will be displayed on the page. Example: Your PAN (PAN Aadhaar) is linked to the Aadhaar number (Aadhar Number) if they are linked.


PAN-Aadhaar Linking: What Does Govt Say in its Order?


As per the order by the Central Board of Direct Taxes, or CBDT, “Every person who, in accordance with the provisions of sub-section (2) of section 139AA, is required to intimate his Aadhaar number to the prescribed authority in the prescribed form and manner, fails to do so by the date referred to in the said sub-section, shall, at the time of subsequent intimation of his Aadhaar number to the prescribed authority, be liable to pay, by way of fee, an amount equal to, — (a) five hundred rupees, in a case where such intimation is made within three months from the date referred to in sub-section (2) of section 139AA; and (b) one thousand rupees, in all other cases,” states the latest CBDT order dated March 30 this year.


Who is Exempt from linking Aadhaar with PAN?


The government has notified the Following categories who are exempted from Aadhaar-PAN linking:

(i) NRIs

(ii) Not a citizen of India

(iii) age > 80 years as on date

(iv) state of residence is Assam, Meghalaya, or Jammu & Kashmir


Authors Note: Even though the above categories of persons are exempt from linking PAN with Aadhaar, yet if the above-mentioned persons wish to link Aadhaar with PAN, they must pay the amount of penalty of Rs. 500 or Rs.1000 as the case may be.


To conclude, PAN and Aadhaar can be linked by paying Rs. 500 up to 30th of June,2022
