Digital Signature Certificates (DSC) are the digital equivalent to physical identification certificates such as driver license, passport or membership card. Just like the physical certificates serve as proof of identity of an individual for a certain purpose - for instance, a driver's license identifies someone who can legally drive in a particular country - a digital certificate can be presented electronically to prove one′s identity and access information/services on the Internet, along with sign certain documents digitally
What is DSC?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a digital key used to verify the identity of the person who owns it. The Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) has authorized certain agencies to issue this certificate to applicants. Holding a DSC and digitally signing documents ensures a high level of data integrity and is frequently preferred by most businesses in recent times.
Different classes of DSC:
Digital Signature Certificates are classified into three types: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. These DSCs are used for a variety of purposes.
Class 1 Certificate: Individuals/private subscribers will be issued Class 1 certificates. These certificates will confirm that the user's name (or alias) and email address form a distinct subject in the Certifying Authorities database.
Class 2 Certificate: These certificates will be issued for both business and personal use. These certificates will confirm that the information in the subscriber's application does not conflict with information in well-known consumer databases.
Class 3 Certificate: This certificate will be given to both individuals and organizations. Because these are high assurance certificates intended primarily for e-commerce applications, they will only be issued to individuals upon their personal (physical) appearance before the Certifying Authorities.
Types of Certificates:
The three types of certificates are Signature Certificate, Encryption Certificate and Document Signer Certificate
What is a Signature Certificate?
The signature certificate is corresponding to the signing private key. It will be used by individuals or organizations for signing purpose.
What is an Encryption Certificate?
Encryption Certificate is used to encrypt and decrypt the data. The encryption key pair is used by the subscriber for receiving encrypted messages which is encrypted using subscriber's public key.
Why is DSC needed?
Using encryption technology, these signatures provide and enhance security. After verification, sensitive information such as the signature is encrypted; the sensitive information is decrypted and made available. Digital and electronic signatures are both generated online and used to sign documents.
